VIEWING PROBLEMS

If the words and pictures do not format correctly (for example, they appear too close together, or on top of each other), or if you find that the colours do not appear correctly - for example, you are trying to read yellow letters on white background, or there are other format problems, there are several possibilities:

You could be using an old browser. The site you are currently visiting is designed for Microsoft Internet Explorer 5 or 4, or Netscape Navigator version 4 upwards running under Windows 95 or higher. Early versions of these browsers, and both the Windows 3.x and Mac versions of AOL may not display this site satisfactorily. Time to upgrade!

ALL USERS
Occasional instances of graphic files corrupting on Netscape have been reported. If this happens, use Internet Explorer 5 or 4, if possible.

These pages are designed to be viewed at a resolution of 800 x 600.

Go to 'My computer' followed by 'Control Panel', then 'Display' to configure your PC to 800 x 600.

A 15" or 17" monitor will work happily at 800 x 600. If your display is configured to 1024 x 768 (17" or 19" monitor), the background images may not always appear correctly, but will work for the most part.

IMPORTANT NOTES FOR AOL USERS
If you are experiencing poor image quality when using the AOL browser, you should note that this is caused by an option called "compress images" in the browser that causes it to mash images in the interest of faster download times. You should turn this setting OFF, or better still, use a fresh copy of Netscape.

If you right-click on an image and it claims to be a .art file, then you need to do the following:

Click "MY AOL" then go to "OTHER PREFERENCES" followed by "INTERNET" and then "AOL WEB GRAPHICS". Choose the option "NEVER COMPRESS WEB GRAPHICS". You will then view images as .gif and .jpg files in their original quality.

AOL 5 and AOL 6 use an integrated version of MS Internet Explorer. You can download 5 or 6 from the AOL website.

If you do use AOL's internal browser, make sure you maximise it to fill the screen, by clicking twice on the blue bar at the top. Otherwise, you will find it pushes text and images onto the next line.

Ideally, boot up a fresh copy of Netscape 4, 5 or 6. If you load up Microsoft Internet Explorer 4 or 5, it will still have the AOL settings on it.

FONTS
If you have problems with fonts, the settings on your browser might have been changed to override the colours and fonts of pages you visit. To rectify this:

Netscape Navigator:
Go to 'preferences', click on 'appearance', and on 'colours' check that the override button has not been enabled. Check the 'fonts' settings, also.

Microsoft Internet Explorer:
Go to 'Internet options' under the 'view' menu, and check that the 'Windows colours' option is enabled. Have a look at the 'font' settings, too.

It is also possible that your monitor and graphics card are not configured to display the correct number of colours. You must sort this out through the appropriate software and display configurations. Go to 'My computer/Display' and make the appropriate selections.
